Volume Profile & Order Flow · Works on every TradingView plan

Volume X-Ray

A relative volume indicator for TradingView that compares every bar with what is typical for that instrument at that time of day — and names the participation behind the move.

  • Volume that knows the clock. RVOL 1.00× means typical for this hour, so a routine London open reads as routine and an exceptional one stands out.
  • One word per closed bar. 12 participation states, from HEALTHY and THIN PUSH to ABSORPTION and EXHAUSTION, decided on the bar close and never redrawn.
  • Data you can check. The source is always labelled, and a bar with no new sample is held, not filled in.

What is Volume X-Ray?

Volume X-Ray is a relative volume indicator for TradingView from supersmart.money. It compares each bar's activity with the instrument's typical activity on that interval and at that time of day, classifies every closed bar into one of 12 participation states, labels its data source and works on every TradingView plan, including the free one.

Not raw volume: an RVOL indicator that knows the time of day

Most volume tools give you a raw column and a moving average on top. The London open is busy every day, so it always looks exceptional; the night always looks weak; broker tick volume on CFDs has nothing obvious to be compared with; and the average trails the market by design. You end up judging column heights by eye.

Volume X-Ray asks a different question: is this bar active for this instrument, on this interval, at this time of day? It learns a time-of-day profile for each instrument on the exchange clock and measures the typical level with robust statistics — the median and interquartile spread of log activity — so one extreme bar cannot drag the reference. Thresholds come from the instrument's own history, states are decided on the bar close, and the data source is always on screen. The calibration behind it was tuned and tested over hundreds of hours on historical charts of the most traded markets.

What Volume X-Ray puts on your chart

  1. 01

Relative volume by time of day

RVOL 1.84× is almost twice the usual activity for this hour. The open is compared with a typical open, the night with a typical night.

  2. 02

    12 participation states

Each closed bar gets one word — HEALTHY, BUILDING, THIN PUSH, ABSORPTION, CLIMAX, EXHAUSTION and more — instead of column heights to interpret.

  3. 03

    Climax, exhaustion and volume absorption

Orange columns flag climax and exhaustion; purple flags absorption — high activity while the move stalls for at least two bars.

  4. 04

    Histogram and Flow line

Columns show how strong participation is and which side it favours; the Flow line tracks the activity-weighted balance from −100 to +100.

  5. 05

    Open-bar reading with PACE

Below 4h, PACE shows how fast the forming bar is building against what is typical by this point.

  6. 06

    Markers on the price chart

A diamond marks the onset of exceptional activity; bubbles in three sizes show how rare it is for this market.

  7. 07

    Tick volume recognised, source labelled

Broker tick volume gets a longer reference window; VOL, FUT or PRX in the header names the source, and delays are shown.

  8. 08

    Seven alerts, one combined

Seven event classes, each with its own condition, plus one combined alert that saves your plan's alert allowance.

How Volume X-Ray decides what a bar means

  1. It learns first.

On a new instrument CAL n/N shows bars collected versus bars needed — roughly 150–300 on intraday intervals. Events arm only after several dozen more bars.

  2. It compares robustly.

Median and interquartile spread for that time of day, no moving average — a single spike cannot shift the baseline, and the per-bar reading does not lag.

  3. It checks the data.

Zero volume, a closed futures market or a delayed feed means no verdict: the bar is held and marked, and nothing is filled in. An unusable feed switches to a labelled price-based estimate (RACT instead of RVOL).

  4. It needs persistence.

Risk and absorption states take priority; event states such as CLIMAX last at least two bars, background states need several bars in a row.

  5. It commits on the close.

States, markers and alerts become final when the bar closes, and confirmed history is never redrawn.

Built on IQ — Intelligent Quantitative

Every indicator in the family stands on the same foundation, so it reads the chart the moment you add it — and your time goes into the market, not the settings panel.

In Volume X-Ray, Auto-Timeframe sets the comparison windows from the chart interval — roughly the last 3 hours on 1m, half a day on 5m, two weeks on 4h, three months on 1D — and gives broker tick volume a longer window automatically.

  • Auto-Timeframe, on by default

Your chart interval picks a calibration profile tuned over hundreds of hours of testing on historical charts of the most traded markets — gold, oil, major currency pairs, indices, stocks and crypto. Change the interval and the indicator re-tunes itself.

  • Manual Mode for experts

Every value the calibration sets is also a setting of yours. Full control, nothing locked behind the automation.

  • Dark and Light, automatically

The indicator reads your chart background and switches colours and transparency on its own. Line weights and text sizes are set by role.

  • One family, one visual language

The same concept wears the same colour in every indicator. Combined, they divide the chart instead of duplicating it.

  • A universal session clock

Asia, London and New York run on their own city clocks, daylight saving is handled for you, and the instrument class decides which windows apply.

  • Honest by construction

Events print on bar close, closed windows stay frozen, and the data behind a reading is graded or labelled. No profit promises and no hidden guesses: when the data cannot support a reading, the indicator says so.

Historical charts, used for education. Readings describe participation, not direction — no buy or sell signals.

Gold 5-minute chart from the Asian night to the London open: quiet grey columns overnight, bubbles only on truly active bars
An overnight RVOL 1.00× and a morning RVOL 1.00× are two different volumes — and two typical situations.

Gold · 5m · Asian night to the London open

What you read overnight the pane shows low grey columns, TOD below 1 and QUIET. At the London open TOD rises above 1 — yet only bars with RVOL clearly above 1 get a diamond and a bubble.

How to use it RVOL 1.00× at the open is a typical open, whatever the absolute volume. BUILDING → HEALTHY with the Flow line above zero describes a breakout with rising participation. Background: the Asian session range.

Crude oil 30-minute chart on EIA report day: a climax bar with the largest bubble, then exhaustion on the very next bar
A climax, then activity that stops moving price.

WTI crude · 30m · EIA report day

What you read the report bar prints CLIMAX and the largest bubble; the next bar keeps the activity but not the progress, and the state switches straight to EXHAUSTION.

How to use it here it works as a volume climax indicator that also tells you what came next — effort without a price result. CLIMAX → HEALTHY would describe the opposite.

Nasdaq 100 15-minute Wall Street open: a climax followed by healthy participation with the Flow line on the side of the move
An exceptional open that keeps moving price.

Nasdaq 100 · 15m · Wall Street cash open

What you read a tall opening column. On a typical day RVOL sits near 1 with no bubble; on an exceptional day CLIMAX appears.

How to use it CLIMAX → HEALTHY with the Flow line on the side of the move is an open that keeps moving price; CLIMAX → ABSORPTION is activity without progress. Why the hour matters: the London–New York session overlap.

EUR/USD 15-minute chart from Tokyo to London on tick volume: quiet Asia, then participation building at the London open
A quiet Asia and participation building in London.

EUR/USD · 15m · Tokyo to London, tick volume

What you read Asia is QUIET with the Flow line near zero; at the London open the state turns BUILDING and LAST: shows EXPANSION.

How to use it QUIET is background, not a hint. BUILDING after a long calm describes rising participation, and the Flow line shows which side leads it. Tick volume compares only within one broker feed.

Works with the rest of the family

Volume X-Ray tells you how much participation stands behind a move; the family's price-chart indicators tell you where. It draws in its own pane, so you divide the chart instead of duplicating it.

Works with the rest of the family

  • Volume X-Ray + Ultimate Liquidity & Market Structure — Watch for a sweep on a bar with ABSORPTION or EXHAUSTION, or a structure shift with HEALTHY and the flow on the same side.
  • Volume X-Ray + Complete ICT 2027 — Is the session open typical (RVOL near 1) or exceptional (SURGE, CLIMAX)?
  • Volume X-Ray + Volume Profile & Activity Map — The profile shows where volume sat across price; X-Ray shows how active each bar is for its hour.

Keeping the screen tidy: if dashboards overlap, change Position or set Surface to Pane; with many marks, turn off Activity Markers or raise Bubble Spacing. All volume indicators TradingView from the family sit in one category.

Frequently asked questions

Does Volume X-Ray repaint?

No — confirmed history is never redrawn. States, events, markers and alerts are decided on the bar close; below 4h the forming bar shows a provisional reading marked LIVE. See how to verify an indicator does not repaint.

Which TradingView plan do I need?

Any plan, including the free one. Your plan sets how much history the chart loads and how many indicators fit on it.

Which markets and intervals does it work on?

Stocks, futures, FX, CFDs and crypto, on standard candles, from 1m to 1M. Broker tick volume is recognised automatically; a chart without usable volume switches to a labelled price-range estimate.

Why does the reading differ from the built-in Volume indicator?

The built-in Volume shows absolute volume. Volume X-Ray compares each bar with the instrument's typical activity at that time of day, so a tall column at the open can be a perfectly typical open.

Does it have alerts?

Yes — seven alert conditions and one combined alert, each firing once on the bar close. See how to set up TradingView alerts.

Can I combine it with other indicators?

Yes. It draws in its own pane and puts only the dashboard and markers on the price chart; move the dashboard if it overlaps another table.

How do I get access and updates?

Buy, give us your TradingView username and receive the invite within 24 h; the indicator appears under Invite-only scripts, also in the mobile app. Updates arrive automatically.

Can I get a refund?

Refund terms are described on our refund policy page.

Should I buy it or subscribe?

Buy it for $19.99 to own this indicator for life, with updates. Subscribe to IQ Universal from $29.99/mo for every universal indicator, including future ones, at a fixed price while you stay subscribed.
